Fuerteventura by Car - 7 Road Trips by Locals 7 Roadtrips with a local car
Fuerteventura on your own The best road trips with a local car
Fuerteventura is big. If you only stay at the beach, you may see ten percent of it. The other ninety lie in the island’s interior, on the west coast, at the end of gravel tracks and behind mountain passes that are in no travel brochure. For that you need a car – and someone who knows the way.
With a rental car you do not only reach our seven insider tours – you also reach the 34 most beautiful beaches on the island, many of which are only accessible by car, and all 39 hidden gems we have put together for you. The tours on this page connect the best of them into sensible day routes – so you do not drive aimlessly around the island, but with a common thread.
We have put together seven tours. We have driven every one of them ourselves, many of them dozens of times. No tourist routes. No sightseeing buses. Just the island as it really is – with insider knowledge built up over more than thirty years.
Important: For the off-road sections, please check your rental contract or ask the rental company. Some companies expressly exclude off-road tracks, which means you are not insured there.

Tour 01 Pájara · Ajuy · Sicasumbre · La Pared
Culture, caves and the best sunset on the island – all in a single day. The Iglesia de Pájara with its Aztec-style stone reliefs, the five-million-year-old sea caves of Ajuy, the astronomical viewpoint Sicasumbre – and at the end the cliffs of La Pared with the sun directly above the Atlantic. Half a day, a big experience. Start at 9:30 am.
Tour 02 Gran Tarajal · Tiscamanita · Antigua · Betancuria · Pajara · Ajuy
If you only have one single day that does not take place at the beach – then this one. Gran Tarajal, Tiscamanita, Antigua, Betancuria, Pájara, Ajuy, La Pared: the route leads through everything that Fuerteventura really is. Goat cheese dairies on mountain tops, medieval churches, black beaches, sea caves. About 160 km, a full day. Start at 8:00 am – not later.
Tour 03 The East Coast and the Lighthouse
The east coast between Costa Calma and Las Playitas is the Fuerteventura that most holidaymakers never see. Tarajalejo, Gran Tarajal, and right at the top on the cliff: the Faro de la Entallada at 200 metres – 100 kilometres to the African coast. Then spend the evening down in Las Playitas with fresh fish and a sea view. About 80 km, half a day. Start at 12:30 pm.

Tour 04 Extreme Cofete
Long, exhausting, unforgettable. The day you will remember later. Gravel track, end of the world, Cofete beach, Villa Winter, Faro de Punta de Jandía. Not a beach trip – an expedition. An early start is a must: 8:30 am, fill up in Morro Jable, download an offline map, 2 litres of water per person. For some, the most impressive day of their life on Fuerteventura.
Tour 04 Extreme – Cofete (German)
Tour 05 El Cotillo · Lajares · La Oliva
The north in one day – from the west coast to the colonial palace. El Cotillo with its lagoons and the Faro de Tostón, Lajares with its Saturday market and windmills, the Calderón Hondo on the way, and La Oliva with the Casa de los Coroneles – the longest colonial building in the Canary Islands. Relaxed, rich in culture, perfect for everyone who wants to discover the north.

Tour 06 Caleta de Fuste & Puerto del Rosario
The centre of the island – underrated and unjustly rarely visited. The defensive tower Torre de San Buenaventura right at the harbour of Caleta de Fuste, the Salinas del Carmen with the whale skeleton by the sea, and Puerto del Rosario – the real capital of the island with its promenade, street art and Canarian everyday life away from tourism. Half a day, plenty of variety.
Tour 06 Caleta de Fuste – Las Salinas – Puerto del Rosario (German)
Tour 07 From the North : Corralejo · Jandía · Morro Jable
The great island diagonal from north to south – or the other way round. Corralejo with the dunes and the natural park, then the FV-2 through the interior of the island, the Sotavento lagoon, Costa Calma, and right at the end Morro Jable with its harbour and old town. One of the most beautiful routes on the island – ideal as an arrival or departure day if you want to experience the whole island once.

What you should always have with you
A rental car is a must on all tours – public transport does not reach most of these spots. Take water with you, at least one litre per person. Save an offline map before you set off – in the interior of the island and on the gravel track to Cofete there is no signal. Sturdy shoes for Ajuy and the west coast. A jacket for the evening at La Pared and Sicasumbre – it gets cooler than you think.
Why InsiderFuerteventura?
Because it makes a difference whether someone has had two weeks of holiday on Fuerteventura – or has lived there for 30 years.
We know the beaches that no guidebook mentions. The restaurants where the locals eat. The spots that only work if you know when the tide comes in. The shortcuts, the hidden gems, the mistakes tourists make when they do not know the island.
InsiderFuerteventura is not a travel blog. It is what we would tell our guests if we had the time – now written down.
